hot classes aren't rigid any more

"‘Hot girls, hot boys, hot yoga,’ shouts the sign outside Michele Pernetta’s east London studio. In the sometimes uptight world of yoga, such playfulness is a breath of fresh air. Pernetta, it seems, is just as tired of the staid rules and stereotypes.

She is the woman who brought Bikram, the revered 90-minute, 26-sequence class, from Los Angeles to Britain (her first class took place in her front room in 1994, aided by portable heaters).

At the end of last year, she broke away from the world-famous brand and its controversial leader, Bikram Choudhury, to launch her own unique five-class system, designed to suit every level and mood.

It goes by the rather wonderful name of Fierce Grace (masculine enough, she believes, for men to mention in the pub) and it’s clearly going very well: she has five hot yoga studios across the capital and has recently announced a series of Fierce Grace summer retreats in Turkey and Italy."
