Fierce Grace brings hot yoga world to Brixton

"Fierce Grace, the Lamborghini of the hot yoga world, has cruised into Brixton; it’s sleek, high powered and too hot to handle. The new studio on Coldharbour Lane opened a few months back, but Fierce Grace has been pioneering the country’s hot yoga wave since introducing Bikram Yoga to London in 1994...

Having only ever practised yoga at gyms, I was in for a treat at Brixton’s Fierce Grace studio. You’re presented with towels upon arrival, there’s a shoe rack on the wall of the foyer, it’s flawlessly clean so you can pad about the entire place barefoot and the décor is earthy and sort of Scandinavian chic. Down in the actual yoga studio, which is enormous in size with floor to ceiling mirrors on the front and side, a room full of people were stripped down and already working up a sweat just by being in there. It’s dimly lit and very hot but not uncomfortably so. In my visits I encountered a range of different instructors, all of whom had different practises and philosophies but they had one thing in common: super ripped bodies without an inch of fat. I haven’t seen that many six-packs in Coldhardbour Lane since the Brixton Splash.

From the first class I think I felt the intended effects – I met a friend afterwards who told me I was glowing and during one class, whilst holding a pose, I recall feeling a muscle in my back kind of click into its rightful place for the first time ever, as though the heat allowed me to deepen further into a stretch I’d done many times before at room temperature. Even if you’re not specifically into the hot yoga sub-category of yoga, this is a fabulous place to take yoga to the next level. Brixton’s Fierce Grace is a pleasant, calm, professional environment and the instructors are amongst the best I’ve come across. Don’t take my word for it though; check their qualifications, they’re written on their abs."
