The modern evolution of hot yoga

"One of the UK's leading yoga teachers and the lady who brought Bikram Yoga to the UK 15 years ago, Michele Pernetta, has developed a brand new hot yoga system launching this week. Cosmo caught up with the woman who helped start a yoga revolution to find out how the reinvention of Bikram is set to deliver optimum results in the minimum amount of time.

What's the difference with the new Fierce Grace classes?

The Bikram system is excellent and casts quite a large net but I'm trying to widen it further so people who are less able or more able than the average in Bikram classes can have more options. Just to do one class can be a limiting and [traditional Bikram is] only 26 poses so my students go elsewhere for more variety. I want to offer them what they want.

Why are there five interconnected classes?

I've tried to expand Bikram and widen what's on offer. There's one for people not quite ready to work that hard, partially beginners - if you're stressed out or want deep stretches try the not so strenuous one – this is the Core Class. Feirce – aka The Beast is the advanced class – we didn't need it ten years ago because everyone was a beginner! But now some are ready. The Classic class is our version of the traditional hot yoga class, with more alignment, hip opening, and upper body and core strengthening. The Fierce Grace is a user-friendly general level class combining the central poses of Bikram, Hatha and Ashtanga with core strengthening, 'super slow' wisdom, body sculpting, breathing techniques and deep relaxation. The Fix is half the Classic class, a supercharged 50 minutes to get you fitter faster."
